Monetta: Building a Borderless Financial SuperApp

Monetta is a borderless financial SuperApp I helped shape as the first product designer, working directly with the CEO. Access to global commerce and financial tools is still deeply unequal. Large parts of the world cannot reliably use international cards, pay or shop across borders, or reach global brands and modern financial products.

Most existing solutions address only one narrow slice of the problem (a wallet here, remittances there, a prepaid card somewhere else) and break the moment someone tries to actually live with their money globally. Monetta's ambition was never to become another wallet. It was to become a financial ecosystem that lets people earn, store, spend, and move money freely across borders.

Role: First Product Designer (end-to-end product design, MVP strategy, information architecture, design systems, and close collaboration with the CEO on product direction).

The question that guided everything was simple and unforgiving: "What is the smallest product that proves people will trust us with their money, and actually use it?"

The onboarding flow: from splash screen to verification, designed to feel familiar and trustworthy.

The real challenge was trust, not features

Monetta could have launched with a long list of capabilities: multi-currency wallet, token-based payments, global eCommerce access, digital service top-ups, debit cards, cross-border transfers. Each one was legitimate. Building all of them at once would have created a product that felt impressive in a pitch deck and fragile in people's hands.

Financial products live or die on trust. People do not experiment casually with money the way they experiment with social apps. Every unclear label, every unexpected conversion, every moment of uncertainty compounds into hesitation. The work was less about adding surface area and more about reducing the distance between "this looks interesting" and "I am willing to put real value here."

We treated the MVP as a proof of reliability rather than a showcase of technology.

Guiding principles that emerged

Three principles took shape through the early decisions and shaped every major product choice that followed.

Show value, not technology. Users should experience money that behaves predictably. The underlying mechanisms could be sophisticated; the interface had to feel ordinary and reliable.

Build confidence before ambition. Onboarding and early moments had to explain why Monetta exists, deliver tangible value quickly, and lower the emotional cost of trying something new with money.

Design a SuperApp that stays simple. The product needed a clear primary spine of actions, progressive disclosure of power, and structural patterns that could expand later without forcing users to relearn the product.

Onboarding that builds confidence, not hype

Traditional financial onboarding often oscillates between aggressive marketing language and dense compliance screens. We took a different route. Onboarding was treated as the first proof of the product's character. It explained why Monetta exists, showed concrete value early, and deliberately reduced fear around new financial systems.

The goal was not excitement for its own sake. The goal was quiet confidence. This focus on early value and trust produced a measurable outcome: a 25% increase in user retention through personalised product discovery. People stayed because the product demonstrated usefulness before it asked for deeper commitment.

Shopping across borders

One of the earliest and most important choices was how to handle value itself. Token-based systems can easily become abstract and intimidating. We rejected that path. Tokens in Monetta were designed to behave like currency. Conversion was clear and reversible, and users saw value in terms they already understood rather than being asked to adopt a new mental model.

No belief in the underlying technology was required, only reliability. This decision reduced cognitive load at the exact moment it mattered most: when someone first moved real money into the system. By making the representation of value feel familiar, we made the leap of trust smaller.

The multi-currency wallet

At the center of the ecosystem sat the multi-currency wallet. Its job was not merely to hold balances. It was to help users preserve value. We designed and evolved the wallet experience so that people could keep value in USD and other stable references when local conditions made that desirable.

The result was a 40% increase in average wallet balances. People were not just transacting; they were trusting the product with meaningful amounts over time. That shift, from occasional use to storing value, is one of the strongest signals a financial product can receive.

The card experience

A physical and virtual card brought Monetta into the real world. Users could select card designs, choose delivery methods, track shipment progress, and manage security controls, all within the same coherent experience. The card became the tangible proof that Monetta was real, not just another app promising future capability.

Crypto integration

Leading end-to-end design across Wallet, Shopping, and Crypto integrations created consistent patterns that increased transaction frequency by 30%. The crypto experience followed the same principle as everything else: show value in terms people understand, keep the interface predictable, and never force users to become experts before they can act.

A SuperApp without the weight of complexity

A SuperApp can easily become a dense collection of features competing for attention. We refused that outcome. The experience was organised around clear primary actions. Secondary capabilities appeared only when they became relevant. Progressive disclosure protected newcomers while still leaving room for power users.

Structural patterns were established early so that future expansion (shopping, additional services, deeper integrations) would feel like natural extensions rather than bolted-on modules. This systems-level approach paid off. The product felt coherent even as its surface area grew.

What the work ultimately demonstrated

Monetta proved that a borderless financial product does not need to overwhelm users with every possible capability on day one. It needs to earn the right to expand by first becoming reliable, understandable, and useful in a smaller form.

  • 25% higher retention from an onboarding strategy centred on early value and trust
  • 40% higher average wallet balances through a multi-currency experience focused on preserving value
  • 30% higher transaction frequency from coherent system-level patterns across Wallet, Shopping, and Crypto
  • 20% higher engagement from close partnership between design and leadership on product strategy

More important than the numbers was the qualitative shift. People began treating Monetta as a place where money could live, not just pass through. By prioritising clarity over spectacle, confidence over hype, and scalable simplicity over feature density, we created a foundation that could grow into a genuine borderless financial ecosystem without collapsing under its own complexity.

In money products, trust is the real product. Everything else is infrastructure for earning it.
